Beginner's Hiking Guide: Essential Gear for Your First Outings

Hiking, the Gateway to Nature

Hiking is the most popular outdoor activity in France, with over 10 million participants. Accessible to all, it doesn't require sophisticated equipment to start – but a few well-chosen accessories will radically transform your experience.

Essential Basic Equipment

Hiking Boots

The most important investment. Choose shoes adapted to the terrain: low-cut for easy paths, high-cut for rough terrain. A Gore-Tex membrane is essential if you hike in wet weather.

The Backpack

For a day hike, plan for 20-30L. For several days, 40-60L. Make sure it has a hydration bladder compartment or a back pocket for a water bottle.

Water Management

Golden rule: always carry more water than you think you'll need. Count 500ml per hour in summer in sparsely shaded terrain. An insulated bag keeps your water cool throughout the day.

Technical Accessories for Safety

Headlamp

Even for a day hike, always carry a rechargeable headlamp. In case of delay, it can be vital. Choose a USB-C rechargeable model with a minimum of 500 lumens and 8 hours of battery life.

Sun Protection

  • Hat or cap with UV protection
  • Polarized UV400 sunglasses
  • SPF50+ sunscreen, to be reapplied every 2 hours
  • Anti-UV technical clothing for long hikes

First Aid Kit

Minimum: bandages, disinfectant, pain reliever, emergency blanket. An emergency blanket weighs 50g and can save a life.

Comfort Accessories for Enjoyable Hiking

Cooling Towel

Soaked in water and placed on the neck, it significantly lowers body temperature. Lightweight and compact, it takes up little space in your bag.

Dry Bag

To protect your smartphone, documents, and electronics in case of rain or crossing streams. Choose a floating IPX8 model for maximum protection.

Ultra-light Folding Chair

For picnic breaks or summits. Modern models weigh less than 1kg for a 150kg capacity. Ideal for comfortably having lunch in the heart of nature.

Portable Hammock

For well-deserved breaks between two trees. Some hikers even sleep in hammocks during their bivouacs.
